    • What is Okayama Denim?
Kurashiki City of Okayama Prefecture, known for its historical tourism district, is also known as the birthplace of Japanese jeans.
Okayama Prefecture and namely Kurashiki City, continue today to produce high-quality Japanese-made denim known widely with names such as “Okayama denim” “Kurashiki denim” and “Kojima denim”.

    • Betty Smith Tokyo Ebisu workshop
Betty Smith’s Tokyo Ebisu Workshop stands at a 6-minute walk from JR Ebisu Station, in the 5th floor of a building. Look for “Betty-chan”, the company mascot character on the logo. Get ready for your Kojima denim-making experience!
    • Make your Jeans Unique! Pick your Materials
It’s time to get to work. First, decide on a pair of jeans that will be your base. There is a wide variety of sizes and designs. Next, choose your favorite buttons, rivets, and leather patches. Take your time and pick the parts that will make your pair of jeans unique!
    • What is Selvage Denim?
The “Selvage” is to the rim of the fabric (referred to in Japanese as the fabric’s “ears”), and one characteristic of Japanese denim is the way these rims are sewn. The antiquated machines used in the manufacturing leave a red anti-fray seam on the selvage, hence their Japanese nickname of “red-ear” denim. Currently, you may also see them in blue or yellow.

Compared to regular denim, not only does selvage denim take a longer time to weave, but it also requires double the length of material.
While the extra time and material does show in the increased price, the old machines used for their production can only be manipulated by select craftspeople. The finished jeans are especially comfortable. They fully realize the denim’s potential, and continue to break in over time for lasting comfort.
    • Experience the Buttoning Machine
Now that you have your pair of high-quality selvage jeans and hardware, it’s finally time to put them together. Just like in the company’s main Kojima factory in Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture, you will get to experience the real buttoning machine used by the craftsmen. Detailed instructions will be provided by the staff, so no experience is needed.

For people living around Tokyo, or who don’t have access to Okayama, Betty Smith’s Tokyo Ebisu Workshop is a great opportunity to experience the craftsmanship of their jeans!
    • It’s Complete! Your Unique Pair of Kojima Jeans
Once the hardware is attached, your unique pair of Kojima jeans is complete! Kojima jeans are typically somewhat expensive because of the high-quality denim used, but this is a great opportunity to get a pair at a reasonable price! To top it off, the precise craftsmanship of the jeans make them very durable. Enjoy the jeans’ aging process as it slowly grows a unique patina, and becomes a lasting partner to your everyday life!
    • Betty Smith Jeans Museum & Village
The Betty Smith Jeans Museum & Village is located in the Kojima district of Kurashiki City, Southern Okayama Prefecture, This is an amusement area run by Kurashiki’s long-time jeans producer, Betty Smith, and the entire area is designed to a cute, village-like aesthetic.
