The central area of Takayama developed in the Edo era as a castle town with a bustling merchant culture. Much of its architecture remains from the late-Edo to mid-Meiji periods. • Shirakawa-go Village: A relaxing countryside scenery
Shirakawa-go Village will greet you with a picturesque scenery of a peaceful rural countryside. Protecting the unchanging rural lifestyles of Shirakawa-go’s people in Gifu Prefecture's countryside are the houses, over 100 of which still have a traditional Gassho-zukuri construction. “Gassho-zukuri” (clapped-hand construction) is a uniquely Japanese architectural style, characterized by a tall triangular roof.
In acknowledgement of Shirakawa-go's constant efforts to protect its traditional countryside scenery and rural lifestyle, UNESCO designated the village a world heritage site in 1995. Regardless of one’s upbringing, Shirakawa-go's rural countryside scenery is sure to arouse some nostalgia from someplace in the heart. Enjoy a moment of peace and relaxation at Shirakawa-go village.
    • A View of Shirakawa-go: a diorama of Japan's rural countryside
Ogimachi Castle was built at the top of a steep cliff, and its ruins continue to overlook the village of Shirakawa-go. The rural countryside view seen from here is a treasure of its own.
The forested mountains and sprawling fields take on a new coat for every season, making a picturesque countryside scenery for every season. Witness Shirakawa-go's harmony of traditional architecture and rural Japan's nature, and the unforgettable vista that they create!

At the Hakukokan museum, virtual images and projection mapping create a unique multimedia adventure on the history and methods of gold-leaf crafts. Our highlight was the “Chamber of Gold”, whose entire walls were covered in a layer of gold. The glow of the golden walls blinded us on entrance, and was a gorgeous sight!
