Takigumo at Shiori Pass

Shiori Pass

Shiori Pass, in Uonuma, Niigata, sits 1,065 meters above ground level. It is a popular spot for cycling and driving. The fall foliage at Shiori Pass can be seen between mid October and early November, and the view is stunning. From Shiori Pass, you can see a natural phenomenon called takigumo (meaning “waterfall cloud”). Takigumo is when a cloud cluster looks like it is falling from the sky downwards on a mountain slope. The best chances of seeing takigumo are in early autumn mornings. The hiking path on Mount Echigo-Komagatake beings at the top of Shiori Pass. There are several other hiking routes, such as the Kushigahana and Komanoyu routes.
