Usui Pass
Usui Pass
The Usui Pass locates at the prefectural border between Gunma and Nagano. The pass locates 960 meters above ground level, and was once a significant checkpoint on the Nakansendo Route that connected the Edo (Tokyo) area to the Shinshu (Nagano) area. In the late 1800s, the Usui Pass Railway was constructed on the pass, but was discontinued in the late 1900s when the shikansen bullet trains flourished. Today, you can hike through the Apt Street, a 6-kilometer long hiking course set on the pass. After your hike, you can enjoy a bath in the nearby hot spring.
