Daigoji Temple

Cherry blossoms at Daigoji Temple

Daigoji Temple is a world heritage site located in the southern part of Kyoto City. This historic temple was founded in the year 874 and is certified as a historic site. The highlight of this temple is the five-story pagoda, the oldest wooden building in Kyoto Prefecture, and the "Sangho-in" and its gardens, where the Momoyama-era's fusumae are gorgeous. Another must see place is the "Reihokan". Here, many national treasures, important cultural properties, and old documents are kept in storage, and a part of the collection has been opened up to the public.

Also, as Daigoji Temple is famous for its cherry blossoms, about 1000 trees of cherry blossoms, such as Weeping cherry blossoms, Somei Yoshino, Yamazakura, and double cherry blossoms, cover the temple grounds in pink in the springtime. The sakura viewing event, Houtaikou, which is held every second Sunday of April, is very popular. In honor of the magnificent "Hanohananami" that Toyotomi Hideyoshi went to in 1598, a procession of about 200 people dressed in costumes of the Azuchi Momoyama era walks through the precinct.
