Byodoin Temple
Byodoin Temple
Byodoin Temple, located in Uji City of Kyoto Prefecture, is nationally known as the model on the 10 yen coin. This building was originally used as a villa for Michinaga Fujisawa. However, his son, Yorimichi, renovated the area to a luxurious temple. The Houou hall, which resembles a Chinese Phoenix spreading its wings, is most definitely the highlight of this area. The Houou hall, officially known as Amida Hall, has been designated as a national treasure. The hall is opened to the public every day, so please take a close look at the rich-colored decorations. The Buddha Statue that sits inside the hall was made in the Heian Period, and has also been named a national treasure. The "Byodoin Temple Museum Ho-sho Hall" was built in 2001. In this museum, visitors can see national treasures and videos of inside the Houou hall through 3D computer graphics.
