Yakusugi Museum
The Yakusugi Museum is located on the southwestern area of Yakushima Island. The museum is made up of the main building and the annex building, and here, you can learn all about the Yakusugi cedar tree. In the main building, there is an exhibit of the huge chainsaws used to cut down the trees, along with the tools used to cut down the trees during the Edo period. One display you cannot miss is the Jomon-sugi branch. The Jomon-sugi, which is over 1,000 years old, is said to be the tree with the largest trunk, and its fallen branch measures 5 meters long and weighs over 12 tons. In the annex, you can see a Yakusugi cedar stump. There is also a garden where you can relax. At the museum shop, you can buy items made from the leaves of the cedars.
