Shiratani Unsui-kyo Ravine

Shiratani Unsui-kyo Ravine, located on the island of Yakushima in Kagoshima prefecture, is famous as the place that inspired the Ghibli film, “Princess Mononoke”. The ravine is rich in nature, and has moss growing all over the trees and rocks. You can hike through the ravine, and there are a few courses to choose from. Some are as short as one hour, while others last as long as 6. From Taiko-iwa Rock, you can get a lovely view of Yakushima’s cedar forest. Since the elevation is quite high and the hikes are long, make sure to dress appropriately. Prepare for wet weather, too.
