Cedar tree at Susa shrine

Susa Shrine

Susa Shrine, in the city of Izumo, Shimane, is a shrine rich in history and tradition. The shrine has been mentioned in many ancient texts, and is famous for having a connection with Susano-onomikoto, a character from a Japanese legend. There are several spiritually significant spots in the shrine, such as the 1,300-year-old cedar tree and the “seven wonders of Susa” spot. The main hall of Susa shrine was built in 1861, and is a prefectural important cultural property. Every August 15, the tradition of Kiriage-shinji is held. It is a ceremony to pray for a successful harvest, and is a intangible cultural property of Shimane prefecture. Nearby, you can find Susano-o-kan, where you can learn about the Japanese legends relating to the Izumo area.
