Chusonji Temple
Chusonji Temple, in the town of Hiraizumi, Iwate, was built in 850. It is the main temple of the Tohoku region for the Tendai School of Buddhism. In 2011, the temple was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tsukimizaka Slope, the main approach to the temple, has been used for centuries. The trees on the side of the slope were planted in the Edo Period (1603 – 1867). Konjiki-do Golden Hall is another site you cannot miss. The hall, built in 1124, is decked with brilliant gold items. It retains its original form since it was built. Inside the temple grounds, you can find the Chusonji Kanzan-tei Restaurant.
