Mitsumine Shrine
Mitsumine Shrine
Mitsumine Shrine is located in Chichibu City, western Saitama Prefecture. This shrine is located in a deeply rural mountain area and is known as a hotspot of spiritual energy. Mitsumine Shrine enshrines the two creator gods of Japanese mythology, “Izanagi no Mikoto” and “Izanami no Mikoto”, and is said to grant worshippers a harmonious marriage.
Within the shrine grounds stands a massive 5.2m statue of Yamato Takeru no Mikoto (an ancient Japanese royal), whose measures an astounding 15m in total above the ground. The 800 year-old divine tree said to have been dedicated by Hatayama Shigetada, a Kamakura-era warlord, is also a sight to behold. As you walk down the approach, the “Okumiya” (back shrine) greets you from in between the deep greenery.
Mitsumine Shrine has various festivals throughout the year. The “Mitsumine Shishimai (Lion Dance)” that takes place in the summertime is recognized by the City of Chichibu as an intangible folk-culture property. Unlike the typical Shishimai dances in Japan, Mitsumine Shrine’s is performed in a deer mask, white socks, and hakama pants.
In the Winter time, an event called “Inori-no-Tomoshibi” (Flames of Prayer) takes place. Here, visitors place their wishes into handmade lanterns, and dedicate them to the shrine.
