Mount Yarigatake
Mount Yarigatake
Yarigatake mountain straddles Nagano and GIfu Prefectures. At 3,180m in elevation, it is proudly the fifth tallest mountain in Japan.
The climbing season starts after the monsoon ends, and finishes around early October, when the year's first snowfall is said to be around. The mountain is a treasure trove of alpine plants, where alpine flowers bloom one after another in the summer. In autumn, mountain ash tree fruits turn bright red and Erman's birch tree leaves change to a brilliant yellow color.
There are 5 routes to get to the top. On the way, you can stay at Yarigatake Sanso inn which is located just below the top. If the weather allows, you can enjoy the starry sky, sunset and sunrise.
There are various touring spots such as Karuizawa and Zenkoji in Nagano Prefecture, and Shirakawago in Gifu Prefecture. A trip to Yarigatake Mountain can also make a great complement to trips to such places.
