The mountain on the border of the two prefecture boasts an altitude of 1,372 meters, and is called “the Roof of Kishu.” The origin of the name Mount Gomadan can be traced back to the Genpei War around the 12th century, when Tairano Kiyomori, having gotten defeated in the war, reached this area and burned gomagi (a type of wood) to forecast his own destiny. Mount Gomadan has many places that are famous for their beautiful views of autumn-colored leaves, such as Koyaryujin Skyline and Imobara Gorge. In autumn, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the mountain that has turned all yellow. In the vicinity stands a 33-meter tall Gomasan Sky Tower. The tower, built according to the history of Mount Gomadan, has a unique shape that looks like a pile of gomagi. Mount Gomadan is definitely worth a visit.
