Ushio Shrine is located near Lake Kamo in Sado City, Niigata Prefecture. It is a shrine that was built to separately enshrine some gods of Izumo Taisha (Izumo Great Shrine) in 792, and it is familiarly known as "Tenou-san of Katagami." The worship hall is solemn, and on the front, sides and back, you can see the sculptures designated as Sado City's tangible cultural property. Animals and plants including tigers and carp and stories about Emperor Juntoku are finely sculpted in three dimensions. In front of the worship hall stands an approximately 1,000-year-old holy tree, which is popular as a spiritual energy site that blesses people with easy delivery and children. Next to the hall is a stage of "Noh", which has been popular as one of the traditional performing arts of Sado Island. On June 12 every year, Takigi Noh is performed on the stage, whose roof is hip-and-gable tiled in front and hipped in back.
