Tsuboya Yachimun street
Tsuboya Yachimun-dori street in central Naha is the perfect place to soak up Okinawa’s unique culture. Yachimun, which means pottery in the local dialect, is one of Okinawa’s leading articrafts. The street dates back to 1682 when kilns scattered across Okinawa were relocated here to create a pottery village. Today, the picturesque neighborhood is lined with old houses creating a 1960s-like streetscape. There are about 45 shops, many of them are gallery shops of neighborhood kilns or stores that sells Yachimun pottery from various locations across Okinawa. Yachimun ceramics are also used at neighborhood cafés and restaurants. Come try the potter's wheel and make a shisa --the mythical lion-dog-like creature that adorns Okinawa's rooftops and entrances. Visit the Naha City Tsuboya Yakimono museum for a closer look at the history of Okinawa’s traditional ceramics. The museum often runs special exhibitions and various events that celebrate Yachimun pottery.
