Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace

The Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace in Shizuoka prefecture, built in 1857, played a major role in Japan’s industrialization during the late 1800s. It was awarded World Heritage Status in 2015, as a part of the Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution collection. The Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace was a metal smelting site, and the metals were then used to create cannons and other items. At its Guidance Center, you can learn about the history of the Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace and its significance through exhibitions and videos.
