Ito Hirobumi Villa
Ito Hirobumi Villa
Ito Hirobumi Villa is located in Hagi City in the north of Yamaguchi Prefecture. This building was dismantled and reconstructed from a villa built by Ito Hirobumi in current Shinagawa, Tokyo. The villa in Tokyo was vast with a courtyard, a Western-style building, a study room, a detached parlor, a kitchen, a bath, and a warehouse. In Hagi City, three buildings among them have been relocated, including a part of the entrance, a large hall, and a detached parlor. Visitors can also enter the building and take a tour. The mirror ceiling of the main hall and the joint ceiling of the parlor are especially spectacular, which were crafted by Ito Mansaku, a Japanese carpenter of the Meiji era. Around the area, there is the “Ito Hirobumi’s old residence” where Hirobumi was born and raised. Also some places related to his teacher Yoshida Shoin, such as “Shoin Shrine,” “Shokasonjuku Academy,” and “Birthplace of Yoshida Shoin" are located nearby. Explore around the city of Hagi and you may feel the lives of the many great leaders of Japan.
