Kozoji

Kozoji

Kozoji is located in Kakuda City of southern Miyagi Prefecture. This quiet temple is surrounded by flowing streams and mountain greenery. Kozoji was built by the monk, Tokuitsu Bosatsu in 819. The part of this temple that draws the most attention is the "Amidado", built in 1177. Fujiwara no Kiyohira, the builder of this structure was said to have modeled it after the "Chuusonji Konjikido" (a grand, golden temple in Iwate Prefecture). It is known as the oldest wooden structure in Miyagi Prefecture, and has been designated a nationally important cultural property of Japan. Another thing to see here is the "Amida-nyoraizazo" Buddha, at the main altar of Amidado. Standing 5.18 meters tall, this altar is almost unchanged from when it was made over 800 years ago. This spot allows one to experience the culture and history of the Northern Fujiwara family. Kozoji allows visitors to enjoy nature in all four seasons, whether it be cherry blossom viewing in spring or firefly watching in summer. The neighbouring Takakura Park has a beautiful garden, offering a slow and relaxing time.
