Former Residence of Bunnoshin Tamaki
Former Residence of Bunnoshin Tamaki
"Former Residence of Bunnoshin Tamaki" is located in Hagi city of northern Yamaguchi. Living in this house, Bunnoshin Tamaki was acknowledged as the uncle of Shoin Yoshida, a famous educationist from the Bakumatsu era. Within this one-story wooden thatched-roofed house, family trees and self-portraits of him are displayed. As the founder of the private school "Shoka Sonjuku" academy, he was known for his strict education toward Shoin since his childhood. With the academy producing many great figures of that time, he continued teaching in Shoka Sonjuku even after the death of Shoin. Often described as a strict personailty toward both others and himself, he commited suicide upon feeling responsible for not being able to stop the "Hagi-no-ran" war in 1876, in which many of his disciples participated. "I will repent for my educational responsibilities with death" was the last words he left before ending his life.
