Yokai Shrine

Yokai Shrine* is located in Sakaiminato City, western Tottori Prefecture. It is a shrine located on Mizuki Shigeru Road, which starts from JR Sakaiminato Station.

The shrine was founded on January 1st 2000 in the city of Sakaiminato, which is the hometown of Shigeru Mizuki who gave birth to the popular anime "Gegege no Kitaro". This anime depicts the yokai (apparition) Kitaro, and the shrine was built was constructed with the aim of "protecting the natural environment where yokai (apparition) can easily live,"

The sacred dieties are a huge black granite boulder with a height of more than 3m, and a 300 year-old Keyaki (closely related tree species to elm trees), into which Mr. Mizuki himself inserted his soul. It is said that you can receive energy from the yokai if you touch the deities after two bows and two claps.

Inside the shrine precincts, playful gimmicks are set up in various places. This includes the "Eyeball Father's Purifying Water" with spinning eyeball models, and the Omikuji (fortune) Robot, which dispenses fortune-telling strips for visitors. The robots resemble characters from the famous animation such as Kitaro and Nezumi Otoko.

At the shop next to the shrine, you can find Kitaro goods such as colorful amulets and Ema (wishing tablets). The shrine's unique "Goshuin" red stamp is available for free.

(*The shrine name's official notation is "Youkai Shrine". It has been adjusted here for phonetic consistency.)
