Hanyu Rest Area (Tokyo-bound)

Hanyu Rest Area (Tokyo-bound)
Hanyu Rest Area (Tokyo-bound) is located in Hanyu City, northeastern Saitama Prefecture. Located at the sounthern most point of the Tohoku Expressway, it was remodeled and reopened as the Onihei Edodokoro in December 2013.
The design reproduces the world of the historical novel Onihei Hankacho (Criminal Record) in which the director of "Aratamekata" (an crime-enforcing position during the Edo Period), managed arsonists and bandits. The Tohoku Expressway corresponds to the Nikko to Oshu Kaido Road of the Edo Period. Since Kuribayashi Sekisho (checkpoint), which was the entrance to Edo (modern day Tokyo) was located close to the Hanyu Rest Area, the rest area's remodeling concept was a reproduction of an Edo Period townscape.
Long established stores since the Edo Period and famous stores preserving the tastes of Edo are featured, so you can enjoy dining and shopping while feeling as if you are time traveling back to the Edo Period.
