Unaguhime-jinja Shrine
Unaguhime-jinja Shrine
Unaguhime Shrine, located in the town of Yufuin in Oita prefecture, is famous as one of the stops for the Scarborough cabs and the horse carriages. When people began moving into the area of Yufuin, they were having trouble with the poor flood control. It is said that an unagi, or eel, was enshrined and worshipped at this shrine to help with the flood control, and that is how the name of the shrine originated. You can find the Ogosho-no-Osugi cedar tree about a 15-minute walk from the shrine. The tree is 1,000 years old, and designated as a national natural monument.
