Matsumoto Castle Exterior and a red bridge

Matsumoto Castle

Matsumoto Castle in Nagano prefecture is one of the oldest remaining castles in japan. The castle keep is a six-story structure, although it looks like it is only five stories from the outside. Every night, from sunset to 10:00p.m., the castle keep is lit up and creates a beautiful, dream-like view, and on days with light to no winds, the surrounding moat reflects the illuminated castle. The castle is unique in that it has buildings from both Japan’s feudal days (1467 – 1590) and from the Edo period (1603 – 1867).
