Rakanji Temple

Rakanji Temple locates in Oita prefecture’s steep, rocky area of Yabakei Gorge. The temple is home to over 3,700 Buddha statues and monk statues. 500 of the statues are inspired by loyal monks, and can be found in Murokutsu Cave. You can either climb up to Rakanji Temple, as it lies on the middle of a mountain, or take the Yabakei Lift. Visit in the autumn to see the beautiful fall leaves surrounding the temple and decorating the entire gorge.
