Zhuihoden Mausoleum
Zhuihoden Mausoleum
Zuihoden Mausoleum enshrines Date Masamune, one of the most prominent feudal lords during the Edo period (1603 – 1867). He ruled the Sendai domain (current day Miyagi prefecture), and contributed in expanding the area into a flourishing city. The mausoleum is built in the architectural style of the Momoyama period (1573 – 1615), when Date was in power. The details of the carvings and paintings are precise and vivid, and represent the dignity and prestige of Date. In the mausoleum grounds, you can also find Kansenden, Date Tadamune’s (second ruler of the Sendai domain) mausoleum, and Zennoden, Date Tsunamune’s (third ruler of the Sendai domain) mausoleum. In the museum right next to the mausoleum, you can find documents and artifacts from the Sendai domaindays. There is even a replica of Tsunamune’s face, which was built based on the remains of his facial structures.
