Lake Chuzenji
Lake Chuzenji, in Okunikko, Tochigi, is a lovely lake located 1,269 meters above sea level, being the highest in Japan. The circumference measures 25 kilometers, and the waters are 163 meters deep. The lake was created about 20,000 years ago after Mount Nantai erupted. You can see Mount Nantai to the north of the lake, Senjogahara Marshland to the northwest and Chuzenji Temple to the east. Autumn is a great season to visit Lake Chuzenji. The fall leaves color the mountain, and you can see this view especially well by riding a boat on the lake.
