Heisen-ji Hakusan Shrine

Heisen-ji Hakusan Shrine
Heisen-ji Hakusan Shrine, located in the northern region of Fukui Prefecture, is surrounded by a mass of greenery. Due to the tremendous amount of moss, the temple is also known as the Moss temple. After opening in 717 by the priest, Taicho, this temple has been used as a base point for Buddhist pilgrimages. It is one of Japan's 3 largest structures. In recent years, remains of stone pavements, stone walls, and prehistoric buildings have been discovered. In 1997, the temple was designated as a National Historic Ruins Area. Take a look at the Kokumei Kyugenjyouin Tea Garden, the hand washing well, and the worship hall. Large amounts of cedar trees and moss surround the area.
