Shirahige Shrine is located in Takashima City, northwestern Shiga Prefecture, facing Lake Biwa. This is The former Omi province (current Shiga prefecture)'s oldest shrine, built about 2,000 years ago. It is also the headquarters of Shirahige Shrine, where "Saruta Hiko" is enshrined for good luck, marriage and fertility. The current main shrine was built in 1603 at the order of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The cypress construction is a strong reflection of traditional Japanese architectural styles. Shirahige Shrine is gaining in popularity due to the beauty of the torii gate that stands on Lake Biwa. The torii gate and scenery reflects on Lake Biwa during the daytime as well as the sunrise, creating a beautiful scene. Be sure to bring your camera!
