Nagata Inaka Beach
Nagata Inaka Beach
The Nagata Inaka Beach is on the northwestern coast of Yakushima island. This stunning coastline is registered in the Ramsar Treaty as a wetland of international importance. It is one of the world’s most famous spots for sea turtle spawning. From May to July, thousands of sea turtles arrive to the beach to lay their eggs. The baby sea turtles hatch and return to the sea between late July and September. This is one of the few spots in the world where you can witness the phenomenon. If you want to see this, you can join the official sea turtle tour hosted by the Nagata Sea Turtle Committee. In order to preserve the environment for the sea turtles, the beach is closed from 7:30p.m. to 5:00a.m. between May and late August.
