Himeji City Museum of Art
Himeji City Museum of Art
Himeji City Museum of Art is located in Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture. It opened in 1983 to promote art among the city's residents, and the red-brick construction of the museum is highly recognizable.
The building dates back to 1905, when it was built as a military supply warehouse for the Himeji Land Army. Currently, it is registered as a tangible cultural property of the Nation.
The museum exhibits a total of 3,700 pieces of art, including paintings, sculptures, photographs and swords. These pieces come from both in and out of Japan, and many of them have their own deep links to Himeji City.
The “collection room” regularly displays modern masterpieces from French artists such as Georges Rouault and Claude Monet. Regular timed exhibits include the “Himeji City Art Exhibits” that collects works of art from Hyogo Prefecture, and is the oldest ongoing project of its kind. The museum also has a collection gallery and 13 sculptures outside, that can be viewed for free.
