Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine locates in the city of Dazaifu in central Fukuoka. It is the main shrine of over 12,000 Tenmangu shrines throughout Japan, and over 10 million people visit this shrine every year. Tenmangu shrines enshrine Sugawara no Michisane, known as the god of learning and education. Dazaifu Tenmangu was built in 919 after his death. Around 6,000 plum trees of about 200 different types are planted throughout the shrine grounds. From late January to early March, the blossoming plum flowers perfume the shrine premise. During autumn, the fall foliage is amazing as well. The street from Dazaifu Station to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is packed with souvenir shops and food stands. You can buy some Umegae-mochi rice crackers, which have a plum design on them, as souvenirs.
