Koyoseiga
Koyoseiga is located in Himeji City in the southern part of Hyogo Prefecture. The company manufactures Ibushigawara (a type of roof tile), which is sustainable and also called “Ibushigin (oxidized silver)” for its color and luster. The manufacturer is closely associated with the World Heritage Site, Himeji Castle, and the maker’s roof tiles were used for the Daitenshu (the tallest tower in the castle complex) in major repair work in the Heisei Period. Many of the company’s products are used for the castle, including Shachigawara, a roof tile crafted in the form of Shachihoko (an imaginary creature with the head of a tiger and the body of a fish) and Onigawara, in the form of Oni (a demon often featured in Japanese folklore). Koyoseiga offers a program where you can try making a roof tile. In addition to artisan’s work of making a roof tile, the substantial program also includes clay handcrafting. You can set up your own program content based on your preference. Koyoseiga also accept online reservations, so reserving prior to your visit is recommended.
