Ouchi Old Town
Ouchi Old Town
Ouchi Old town, located in Shimogou-machi of southern Fukushima Prefecture, is the post town that connected Nikko and Aizu on the Aizu nishikaidou road during the Edo period. Presently, this town has been designated as a Nationally Important Preservation District of Historic Buildings for its preserved Kayabuki style town layout from the Edo period. Ouhi Old town is full of sights to see. First, the “Ouchi Town Museum” displays photos and tools that show the lifestyle during the Edo period. Second, the slightly separated “Takakura Shrine” in the forest is a must see spot as well. Lastly, please make sure to try all the local foods. The green onion soba, eaten with green onions instead of chopsticks, and the “Tochi mochi”, cake made from pounded chestnuts and mochi rice, are both famous foods of Ouchi. Although the Ouchi Old Town is enjoyable during all four seasons, the winter gives off a fantasy-like atmosphere with the town covered in white snow. In February, the town holds the annual, “Ouchi Old Town Snow Festival” with snow lanterns, so please make your way over!
