Higashiyama Onsen locates in southwestern Fukushima prefecture, and is a hot spring town rich in history and nature. The hot springs has a history of about 1,300 years, and is said to be found by the Buddhist monk Gyoki. During the Edo Period (1603 – 1867), Higashiyama Onsen served as a toji, or as a medical bath for curing illnesses. The waters are not too high in viscosity, and said be good for those with high blood pressure. In the summer, events such as the Oyukake Festival and the Higashiyama Bon-Odori are held. In the winter, you can enjoy bathing outside in the snow.
