Taketomi Island

Taketomi Island
Taketomi Island is a small island locating far down south of mainland Okinawa. The island is famous for its traditional village landscape. In 1987, the village was designated as an important preservation district for historical buildings. Throughout the island, you can find stonewalls decorated with hibiscuses and traditional houses built from red brick. The roads are paved with the island’s white sand and match the blue seas beautifully. You can walk through the villages or ride on a water buffalo cart to tour the streets. Taketomi island is about a 15 minute ferry ride away from Ishigaki Island, and is a perfect day trip destination from there.
