Former Shizutani School
Former Shizutani School
The Former Shizutani School locates in southeast Okayama. It was opened by the Okayama Domain during the Edo Period (1603 – 1867), and was the first public school for commoners. The school is surrounded in a quiet, natural environment. In 2015, the school was designated as a Japan heritage site as a part of a group of sites that played a significant role in modern Japanese education. Parts of the school are designated as important cultural properties, with even one lecture hall being a national treasure. The classrooms and lecture halls are open to the public. There are even mock classes held in the lecture hall. To sign up for these classes, you need at least five people. Every autumn, the Shizutani Festival is held. It is held in autumn since that is when the school opened.
