Sankyo Soko Storehouse

Sankyo Storehouse is a rice storehouse located in Sakata, Yamagata. It has a long history and is still used as a rice storehouse toady. The storehouse was built in 1893 to store rice that was to be shipped out from Sakata Port. The large zelkova trees in front of the storehouse served to block out sunlight from the buildings, so that the inside would stay cool. Twelve storehouses remain today, with two of them being used as museums, the Shonai Rice Museum and the Sakata Yumenokura Local Souvenir Shop. From Sakata Port, you can take a ferry to Tobishima, an island off of Yamagata’s coast. There, you can enjoy activities such as trekking and bird watching.
