Kakunodate Samurai District

Kakunodate Samurai District
The town of Kakunodate’s Samurai District in Akita’s city of Semboku was once a bustling castle town during the Edo Period (1603 – 1867). Today, the area is designated as an important preservation area of historic buildings. There are several samurai houses that remain in good condition, such as the Ishiguro house. The houses are especially beautiful during spring and autumn, when cherry blossoms and the fall foliage decorate their surroundings. Between early October and late November, an autumn leaves light-up event is held in the Samurai District.
