Sendai City Museum
Sendai City Museum
The Sendai City Museum is located in Aoba Ward in central Sendai City, near the Sendai Castle ruins. It was established to store, display, and allow for the research of materials donated by the Date family, who were formerly the feudal lords of Sendai. Inside the museum, folding screens, ukiyo-e paintings, armor and other weapons and ceramics are on display, with a focus on the Date Family materials. The National Treasure “Keicho Kensetsu Missions” is a must-see. There is also an internationally acclaimed collection that includes the Roman Civil Rights Certificate on parchment, a portrait of Pope Paul V, and a portrait of Hasekura Tsunecho. In the surrounding area, you can find the ruins of Sendai Castle, which was the residence of the Date family during the Edo period. The inner citadel and main gate have been burnt down and have and remain unrestored, but continue to be some of Sendai's most important pieces of cultural heritage. Highlights include the statue of Date Masamune standing in the inner citadel.
