Shiga Kogen in the winter

Shiga Kogen

The Shiga Kogen Plateau is in Yamanouchi machi, northern Nagano Prefecture, between Gunma and Niigata Prefectures. It is a lava plateau with an elevation of 1,400 to 2,000m, which resulted from the Shiga Mountain lava flow. The rugged landscapes surrounding Mt. Yokoteyama and Mt. Iwasugeyama are recognizable characteristics of the Shiga Kogen. In addition to lakes such as Onumaike Pond and Maruike Pond, the area is famous for alpine and marsh plants.

Shiga Kogen is popular as a hot springs resort area, and there are 8 areas of hot springs lodgings such as "Kumanoyu Hoppo Onsen". The region is a popular resort area for camping and trekking in the summer, and skiing in the winter.

From January to March, you can enjoy snowshoeing. By using snowshoes, it is possible to walk inside the primeval forests and rime forests, entry to which is generally restricted, and see the fantastic views while feeling as one with nature.
