Situated in Mishima city in east Shizuoka prefecture, the Mishima Taisha Shrine has an ancient and honorable origin. With over three thousand years of history, it is thought to be flowing with the most powerful mystical energy in the Izu area. Many people visit this shrine as the shrine’s gods are said to assist people with their issues and concerns. Being one of the biggest shrines in Japan, Mishima Taisha Shrine is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The main hall is twenty-three meters tall, and there are numerous other precious structures on the shrine grounds. The carvings around the eaves of the shrine are beautiful. Each carving has a meaning behind it, such as wisdom and courage. The shrine boasts a treasure museum with valuable temple treasures on display, such as monuments to the famous poets Matsuo Basho and Wakayama Bokusui who resided in Mishima city. Within the shrine grounds there is a twelve-hundred-year-old, very tall, fragrant tea olive tree that is designated as a national natural monument. In late September, this tree welcomes you with millions of petit blossoms. These flowers are beautiful and very fragrant. Be surprised and feel that the place is filled with rich sweet-smelling blooms – a limited time only experience. Mishima city is called a city of water and has aquifer filtered water forming springs that are fed from Mount Fuji. This city is also famous for its eels. The fresh, crystal clear water is perfect for growing the best quality eels. On the fringe of the shrine, and in the area, you will find long established eel restaurants. Come on in and try the excellent eel meals.
