Daizen Shrine
Daizen Shrine
Daizen Shrine stands in the countryside of Sado Island, Niigata Prefecture. It is a historical shrine with an honorable origin, and according to one theory, its history started in the 9th century. The highlight of the shrine property is "Daize Shrine Noh Stage". In Sado Island, where traditional Japanese performing arts "Noh" has been popular since ancient times, it is the oldest Noh stage in existence. The Noh stage with a thatched roof was reconstructed in 1846 and has been designated as a tangible folk cultural property of Niigata Prefecture. Though only a pine tree is usually painted on Kagamiita (backdrop of a Noh stage), the backdrop of this stage also has a painting of the sun, making it rare and extremely valuable among many Noh stages. Every year on April 18, an annual Noh performance called "Hono Noh" is performed as an offering to God. In June, you can see "Takigi Noh", which is performed by a flame at night, and a traditional comedy "Sagiryu Kyogen."
