Senganen

Senganen is a Japanese garden and former villa built by the powerful Shimadzu clan that once ruled the Satsuma domain, or the present day Kagoshima in southwestern Japan. The garden boasts stunning views of Kin-ko Bay and Sakura-jima volcano in the distance, and is a classical example of the Japanese landscape technique known as “borrowed scenery.” Soak up the majestic view and let your mind wander to Satsuma’s glorious past. The Satsuma clan played a key role in Japan’s modernization and the villa welcomed many important historical figures, including Japanese and foreign royals. Western-styled steel and glass factories and a hydroelectric dam were also built within the vast garden complex. These structures are on the World Heritage sites related to Japan’s industrial revolution during the Meiji era. The garden is also an excellent place to experience Satsuma's rich culture. Sample local dishes at the garden restaurant or visit artisans making Satsuma Kiriko glassware.
The gift shop has elegant souvenirs that will make perfect mementos of your trip to Kagoshima.
