Satsuma Glass Crafts

Satsuma Glass Crafts

Satsuma Glass Crafts is a Satsuma Kiriko cut glassmaking studio in Japan's southwestern city of Kagoshima. Satsuma Kiriko is Kagoshima's traditional cut glassware, which is known for its elegant patterns created by delicate engravings on layers of colored glass. Take a tour of the studio and observe the artisans execute their skills. Visitors can purchase glass cups and tableware at the showroom on the premises.
The highly valued Satsuma Kiriko, an intricate artwork and craftsmanship, ceased production at one point in time. It took more than a century to restore the art, which is now called Shimadzu Satsuma Kiriko. The studio is close to many sites showcasing Kagoshima’s history, culture and natural beauty, so please find the time to explore the sites. The vast scenic garden of Senganen offers a spectacular view of the surrounding landscape. The powerful Shimadzu clan that once ruled this region built a family villa here. The adjacent Shoko-Shuseikan museum shows how Satsuma played a key role in Japan’s modernization.
