Birthplace of Shinsaku Takasugi
Birthplace of Shinsaku Takasugi
The "Birthplace of Shinsaku Takasugi" stands in the castle town of Hagi, located in northern Yamaguchi prefecture. This is where the remains of the house of Shinsaku Takasugi, the famous "Soldier of Fortune of Bakumatsu", was born and raised. Though entering the house isn't permitted, you can enjoy the appearance from the outside with plenty of magnificent objects to see, such as the well used for his first bath upon birth and his self-made slab engraved with haikus. Nearly half of the house rests preserved, including the reception room, living room, areole, entrance, and the kitchen.
You can also find a statue modeling his early 20s at the "Shinsaku Square" nearby. The dignified appearance of him wearing a Hakama is spectacular. Don't forget to stop by the "Shinsaku Takasugi Resouce Center" inside Hagi Museum, where swaddling clothes weared right after his birth to writings from his closing years, and other materials are exhibited.
