Kido Takayoshi Former Residence
Kido Takayoshi Former Residence
"Kido Takayoshi Former Residence" is located in Hagi, a castle town in northern Yamaguchi. The great leader of the Meiji Restoration was born in this house and spent his early 20 years before moving to Edo. Hanging scrolls of his early caligraphy, self-portraits, and other various materials are exhibited inside. Takayoshi Kido was a Japanese samurai and statesman during the Bakumatsu (end of Edo) to early Meiji era. Proclaming himself as Kogoro Katsura, he played an important role for the Choshu domain during the Satsuma-Choshu Alliance, and in the Sonno Joui movement during the Bakumatsu. He is counted as one of the "Three Heroes of the Restoration" along with Takamori Saigo and Toshimitsu Okubo. Surrounded by sites, such as the Hagi Museum, Shinsaku Takasugi's Birthplace, and many other related to the Bakumatsu leaders, you can enjoy a stroll by breathing in the history of the greats.
