Sakamoto Ryoma, one of the most famous samurai in Japan, stayed in Tomonoura in 1867. He was a prominent figure in overthrowing the Tokugawa government to put an end to the Edo period (1603 - 1868). When he was cruising around the Seto Inland Sea, his ship sunk near the Tomonoura Area. He then stayed in the port town at shipping agent Masuya Seiemon's house. The house is now known as "Ryoma's Hiding Place", and is open for visitors to explore.
