Mountain Yaedake
Mountain Yaedake
Mount Yaedake is located in Kunigami-gun, of northern Okinawa. It is 453.4m high above sea level, and is the 2nd highest mountain on the Okinawa main island. Approximately 4 kilometers of the way to the peak is paved, making it possible to climb the mountain mostly by car. On the way up, there are over 7000 cherry trees in bloom, making it a popular spot for driving. ( The cherry blossoms here are an Okinawan variety known as Kanhi-zakura, different from the ones in the Japanese mainland.) On the hillside of Mount Yaedake Sakura no Mori Park is situated, equipped with a playground and washrooms.
Every January, the Motobu-cho Cherry Blossom Festival is held. This event includes stage performances and is famous for being the earliest Cherry blossom festival in Japan. It always attracts many excited locals and tourists.
