Atami Onsen, in Shizuoka prefecture, is one of Japan’s most popular onsen getaway destinations. The hot springs has a history of over 1,500 years. The name “Atami 熱海” derives from a legend that the hot springs from the ocean (海) were so hot (熱) that it boiled the fishes to death. The baths at Atami Onsen was loved by historical figures such as Tokugawa Ieyasu and Ito Hirobumi. The waters of the Atami Onsen baths are weak alkali, and are great for the skin.
