Shoji-ji Temple is located in the Southwestern part of Kyoto City and was built in the year 679 according to the life of the Tenbu Emperor. In the back of the grounds, there is a "Hall of Light", which has precious cultural properties built in the Heian period to the Muromachi period. Inside, you can see important cultural artifacts, such as the Yakushi Nyorai Statue and the smaller statues of Yakushi Nyorai which were found in the womb. In addition, 2 proudly standing 3m tall statues of King Gong Lily are displayed inside.

Shoji-ji Temple is also famous for being a prime spot for sakura viewing; the beauty of these flowers brought the other name for the temple, "Flower Temple". There are about 100 trees on the grounds of the temple. In spring, many people visit to see the breathtaking view of the cherry blossom trees. Within all the trees, the Saigyozakura, which is located next to the bell tower, is a must see. This tree is said to have been planted by the post Heian period singer, Saigyo, himself.
